From the Director's Office
As the Director of the Willington Public Library I am asking residents to urge the Willington Board of Finance (link to their page - https://www.willingtonct.gov/1330/Board-of-Finance ) to restore $50,000 in funding that was promised to the library for the upcoming budget year.
In 2025, the Library Board of Directors agreed at the request of the Board of Finance to use $50,000 in investment income as a one-time measure to offset reductions to the town’s library appropriation. This was done in good faith, with the clear understanding that the funding would be restored this year.
Unfortunately, discussions are being had that the Board of Finance may not restore those funds.
Losing $50,000 from the library’s operating budget will have dire consequences for our community. The library would need to lose days of operation, cut staff, and reduce materials purchased for residents. Services that residents rely on will be impacted, and reduced hours also means fewer visitors, and ultimately less revenue.
The Willington Public Library works hard to stretch every dollar. We rely on a combination of town funding, donations, grants, investment income and fiscal prudency to serve the community. But town support remains the backbone of our ability to operate as a library.
The agreement made last year was clear, and honoring that commitment is essential to maintaining stable library services for Willington residents.
I encourage residents who value the library to contact the Willington Board of Finance and respectfully ask them to restore the promised $50,000 in funding. Your voice can ensure the library remains a strong, accessible resource for everyone.
